Temple Update: Inside and Out

At the beginning of March, the Temple design hub went on a field trip to Vancouver to meet at the offices of Patkau Architects to discuss the conceptual design of the Temple’s auxiliary outer building and surrounding land use. We looked at the practical functions of reception and service spaces. The Temple needs washrooms, storage, flower arranging and altar supply space, a coat room. But we also asked ourselves, what is important about how we approach the Temple? How does […]

“The Temple will be open as a Temple of Light for those who want to find the Light in their own religion. We have to use whatever material we have to reach this inner Light. We have to make the effort to see the Divine in each other, whatever our name, colour, race or religion. It is our greatest reward. Without focusing on the Divine we only struggle for power. But here, in the Temple, we want to be together in the Light.” — Swami Radha

On June 5th, 2014, a fire destroyed the beloved Temple of Light at Yasodhara Ashram. Built on the vision of Swami Sivananda Radha, the Temple was a symbol of hope, peace and unity. For twenty-two years, it was a beacon of Light for spiritual searchers around the world. Although this has been a great loss for our community, we recognize it as an opportunity for renewal. There is potential for great beauty in new beginnings. Follow our progress as we […]

Her inspirational vision – for a Temple open to people from all spiritual traditions, a centre of Light, hope and unity – continues to guide us today. We are honoring her vision by ensuring a Temple of Light stands for future generations […]

Timeline

The Temple of Light started with one woman’s vision. From the time she was fourteen, Swami Radha had recurring dreams of she called “my little temple.” The scene was always the same: at the end of a long road, overlooking a bay, was a temple. It was round, with many doors and windows. It was full of Light. “Everything exists in the unseen before it manifests,” she was told by her guru, Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh. Many years later, at […]

More About Swami Radha

Swami Sivananda Radha (1911-1995) founded Yasodhara Ashram in 1963. A student of Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, she was initiated by him into the sacred order of sanyas in 1956. Swami Radha’s major focus was to interpret the ancient yogic teachings of the East so that they could be understood and applied in the daily life of westerners. She set high ethical standards and encouraged students to develop quality in their lives and manifest their own ideals. A pioneer in the […]
